NEW IN PALM SPRINGS

P A L M  S P R I N G S
Nowhere is the brand’s subtle and playful use of pure shapes and colour more impactful than in these versatile vessels. An original and unique Lightly design, the planters reflect the parallels between the functional mid-century modern forms of Palm Springs, California and the brand’s view of timeless design and practical beauty.

Available in three sizes, the Palm Springs planter is one of the foundational pieces for Lightly’s expanding the range of botanical wares available online and in-store. The large planter is the perfect home for your statement plants. Small and medium suit various uses both indoors and out.

First released in 2016, Palm Springs easily steps in stride with the rest of Second Nature with a harmony of simple forms and the perfect balance between classic and modern.

second nature by Lightly

“Fourteen years into her Lightly adventure, a lot of things have changed for director and designer Cindy-Lee Davies. And a lot of things haven’t.

Celebrating the lifelong give-and-take between consistency and change, the brand’s latest collection Second Nature embraces the comfort and sensibility in practice and habit.

The collection’s 30+ new items, including trays, planters, goblets and brand new objects like the ‘Essence’ incense holder are united by a unique blend of classic and modern through elementary forms and Lightly’s distinct mid-century practicality.

Enduring design, functionality and a sense of resourcefulness have always been a part of Davies’ design approach. Woven seamlessly together with clever use of colour and form, Second Nature creates its own design etiquette grounded in classic design.”

We are super excited to announce our N W A Y bed is shortlisted in the Collaboration category for the Design Files Awards.

The project objective was to design a new bed that accommodated a growing family. A very personal project, the bed had to provide a sense of inclusion, be Australian made and a focus on a practical yet tactile modern design, with reference to traditional craftsmanship at the core.

An ode to Danish design classics and the beauty of hand-made craftsmanship, the bed is both refined and raw, combining solid Victorian Ash frame with dowel wrapping as a bedhead, maximising comfort and enveloping you with a warm embrace.

The bed frame is manufactured locally in Melbourne and crafted by hand; using timber sourced from sustainably managed forests.

The designer-maker, Softer Studio, a highly-skilled cabinetry designer who shares our values of considered living, innovation and timeless design, brings the design to life.

Available through Lightly in your choice of solid Victorian ash or beech timber. The bed is elegantly finished with a natural oil and wax combination to ensure your new bed stays protected all life long.

NWAY is made to order in king or queen sizing, please contact info@lightly.com.au for more information or to place an order.

Our new Ambit Mini Pendant by Muuto has arrived! Designed by TAF Studio, Stockholm-based design and architecture practice, founded by Gabriella Gustafson and Mattias Ståhlbom, their work seeks to breathe new life into domestic products through refined design.

“Our aim is to make ordinary life less ordinary through subtle but effective changes in how products and architecture appear and function. A recurrent departure point in our projects is that everyday objects, by their obvious commonness, can be made uncommon.”

Embodying the values of Scandinavian design, the Ambit Pendant Lamp is as timeless as it is contemporary. Made of hand-spun aluminium that has been hand-painted, the Ambit Pendant Lamp has a white interior to heighten contrasts of its outside shade and enhance the light omitted in any room of a home, office or commercial space.

Cindy-Lee with Teal Oliver Lightly Williamson

With Mother’s day only just around the corner, we follow Lightly director and designer, Cindy-Lee Davies throughout her sentimental journey into motherhood. A strong sense of kinship echoes throughout her recent collection, Grace. Each piece holds a maternal essence and we find out why…

Can you tell us a bit about your experience with pregnancy?

I really enjoyed being pregnant. Of course there were natural moments of feeling overwhelmed with so many changes, but throughout the journey I tried to stay as grounded and approach motherhood with ease, grace and harmony.

What do you love about Motherhood?

Experiencing the joy and innocent purity a little baby brings into the world. It’s a wonderful process watching a baby grow, learn and engage with the world.

It is also a great time to revisit and assess our own values, whether it is what he is to eat, wear or play with. We want to set the best example for Teal as teachers and create a home for the family that aligns with our passion for design, harmony and wellbeing.

Teal with our new cushions

What are the challenges you face being a director and mother, and the most important thing you have learnt so far?

I have always loved being very hands on with the business when designing and creating and I have never been afraid of getting my hands dirty. As a working mother I have learnt the most important thing is being resourceful with your time. Running your own business with a new baby can be a challenging, so surrounding yourself with a supportive work team is crucial. I am very lucky to have this allowing me the flexibility I need to manage and direct from home most days. Pregnancy and motherhood isn’t a solo show, it is the community of people you surround yourself with that nurtures you and your baby, whether it is your pilates teacher or homeopaths support.

I love working as a team with my husband, Willie. We share every day of parenting and are truly grateful daily for Teal and the ability to have a business that allows this lifestyle.

The collection Grace, was influenced by your maternal experience, can you tell us a little bit more about this?

It was a new and beautiful experience for me designing whilst being pregnant. It is a fascinating process as you are continually learning a lot about yourself whilst growing a human inside of you. Daily meditation and embracing the natural process was really important for me. This resonates in the harmony of colours chosen, form and grounded functionality of the collection. I must say now he is on the move, designing it a little different!

What is the future for Lightly?

As Teal continues to grow, our business model will evolve accordingly. At the moment, we are are reshaping and changing the way we work to encourage a positive work life balance for everyone. Teal is our priority and I haven’t wanted to miss a day with him. Lightly is the older sibling!

Since the brands beginnings in 2005 we launched a humble collection after my grandmother Rosemary Lightly so we continue a sustainable business model that brings ethical and artisanal made products to life. We are embrace relationships and values more than ever now and will continue to enrich the lives of others through our style and considered production.

The Assemblages Book Belt in Natural Leather

This week, we have chosen to reflect on the utilitarian spirit of our signature Lightly pieces, and the journey inspiring designer and director, Cindy-Lee Davies to create them.

Many of the products have nostalgic reference of bygone eras, for example, Lightly’s Assemblages collection, designed in 2013, harks back to Australia in the early 1900s and the “utilitarian resourcefulness”, found in the lifestyle. This is a core value to Davies in the design process.

The collection draws on the saddlery aesthetic: the artisan skill, the mix of leather girths and belt buckles and was created in homage of spending weekends at the stables with her grandfather.

The Assemblages Leather Shelves in White

The three styles within the Assemblages are interactive pieces that allow the user to author their own lifestyle, combining various found objects and collections to function as “assemblages” or props for the home.

Her designs reflect the necessary practicality of mid-century Australian makers and remain grounded in functionality. They highlight the beauty in simple utilitarianism and are a personal expression from the heart.

Studio Golden Esplanade project featuring the Infinity Bowl

Surrounded by uncompromised views of Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay, The Esplanade invokes a calm, restorative and enduring connection to its
idyllic bay side location. Working within the bones of an existing late twentieth century build, this four bedroom, five bathroom family home has been reimagined with luxurious warmth and thoughtful durability. Drawing from the rich tonal beauty of the bay, organic surfaces such as natural stone and warm timber are offset by fine metal detailing, completing the sense of understated luxury.
